Having sensitivity sensation on my front right molar for a couple of months. Suspected some kind of cavity on it. Surprisingly, just had my dental check-up quite recently @ 25 May 09. Then on 24 August, I had a refilling to my molar by my regular dentist. With this filling, the sensitivity still persist but reduced. I thought it may gone off after awhile.
In spite of my regular visits to the dentist, I still get toothache. Just found out that over-frequent dental scaling weakens the tooth structures. In some cases, it may fractured the tooth surface.
As a result of the scaling procedures (twice to three times a year), my partially handicapped molar got the 'kick'. It weaken and I could feel the sensitivity sensation whenever it gets in contact with cold/hot substances. My instinct tells me that this tooth is bout to spell trouble.
Toothache (July-September 2009)
My molar began to give me problem. I could feel the pain on periodic moments. However...I thought there's no urgency as the pain was very mild. However, during my recent stay at Cameron, the cool weather gave me a final blow. The pain was excruciating ! Felt like dying...at one time. The last straw, I told myself, "Am definitely gonna get rid of this problematic tooth..SOON !" The pain spreads up to my head.
At this stage, I was still unaware of root-canal technology. Thought that rotten tooth must be extract.
Seek 2nd Opinion on my toothache problem (08-09-09)
Had one filling of amalgam just two weeks ago (24-08-09) by my regular dentist. The pain on my molar became worst. Therefore, I decided to seek a second opinion from another dentist. This dentist gave me another new filling but he would apply certain solution to reduce the infection and swelling inside. He advised me to give it a try b4 I decide on extraction.
The dentist introduced me to root canal treatment. He explained briefly by showing me pictures.
Night after filling (08-09-09)
The pain persisted...and it was excruciating at night after the anaesthetic wore off. TERRIBLE...could hardly sleep or do anything. There was slight swelling around the area which looked red and the tooth itself was sensitive to touch and painful all the time without touch.
So I made up my mind to visit the dentist the very next day.
Root Canal Treatment Day (Thursday 09-09-09)
During the treatment, the dentist drilled a deep hole on my problem molar. Felt only mild pain coz he injected anaesthetic earlier that numbed my nerves around that area. Then he inserted a sharp needle like apparatus continuously into my gum. He twisted the needle as if like he was performing acupuncture on my tooth. The entire procedure took approx. 40 minutes. He cleaned out the entire canal of my molar.
The pain was mild as I was under the influenced of anaesthetic.

Prescription of Painkiller
The dentist warned me that when the current anaesthetic spell gone off,the pain would return. Therefore, I was asked to take Ibuprofen and paracetamol. And also a course of antibiotics to cure inflammation.
Night after root canal treatment (09-09-09)
The pain was UNBEARABLE. I could not sleep throughout the night it was so bad and nothing seemed to help me. I looked into my mouth and noticed my gums had swollen even more and this was actually more visible after the molar tooth he treated -the swelling was actually far greater. Even my face and jaw are slightly swollen and painful .
Day 2 -Thursday (10-09-09)
The pain was under controlled, perhaps by the medications that I took religiously. The antibiotics did created a havoc to my stomach as I'm a gastric prone person. Had light meals in between each time, I felt gassy inside. My tummy was bloated due to the medicines.
The pain killer seemed to give temporary relief as the pain was reduced from the severe level to just about bearable pain. But after middle of the night, I was in agony again and the swelling was just the same and my whole right side jaw painful and slight swelling to face. I carried on with the antibiotics and painkillers throughout the night. I guessed this must be the after effect of the root canal treatment and nothing got to do with my problematic molar.
Day 3 -Friday (11-09-09)
The pain is moderate and just about bearable but there is no sign of the swelling had reduced.
It's now 3 rd day of antibiotics and 3 days since having the root canal treatment. The pain had reduced which shows a good sign. That means my tooth is accepting the root canal treatment.
The swelling too subsided.
Day 4 -Saturday (12-09-09)
The pain and swelling subsided. Good sign....my tooth could tolerate the treatment.
Will keep you updated with my "Molar details". Am currently doing my own research on Endodontic therapy.
Ouch..blogging such a painful story.....
